On Monday May 9th 2015 at 16:36 the Esopus Fire Department and the Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad were dispatched for motor vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer with entrapment and fire in the area of 1535 Route 9W in the Town of Esopus. Firefighters arrived to find 4 vehicles including a tractor trailer with significant damage and a driver entrapped in one of the vehicles. One vehicle caught fire as a result of the collision but the fire was extinguished by the quick thinking of other motorists who stopped to help. Using Hurst tools commonly referred to as the “Jaws of Life” Firefighters were able to extricate the entrapped victim within 11 minutes of the time of dispatch. Two other victims were transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital of Westchester County and Health Alliance Hospital, Kingston Campus by the Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance. Route 9W remained closed for approximately 9 hours to allow for accident investigation and clean up the roadway.
Firefighters were assisted by the Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad, Mobile Life Support Services, Highland Fire Dept, Rifton Fire Department, the New York State Police, Ulster County Sheriffs Office, Ulster County Fire Coordinators Office, New York State DOT, New York State DEC and the Gilpatric–VanVliet Funeral Home.
