This morning, 1/21/2026, at 6:16am the Esopus Fire Department and the Town of Esopus Ambulance Squad were dispatched for a 2 car Motor Vehicle Accident in the area of 1835 Route 9W. While units started to respond it was upgraded to a 2-car head on with entrapment and possible ejection. With that additional information, ALS from Empress EMS was dispatched. Upon arrival units found a 2-car head on MVA with both vehicles off the road on opposite sides of 9W. Members on scene verified one subject was ejected from 1 vehicle and the other vehicle still had one party inside. With the assistance of members on scene and responding Police Officers, that patient was removed from the vehicle via a side window and taken to a nearby hospital by New Paltz Rescue Squad. Sadly, the party that was ejected from the other vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. Route 9W was closed for a prolonged period of time while the NY State Police investigated the accident. The roadway was reopened at 10:50am.
