Accessibility Statement

About this site

This website is operated by Esopus Fire Department, a not-for-profit volunteer fire department that provides personal to the fire district. It is published, maintained, and paid for by the volunteer membership. This site is not owned, controlled, or operated by the Esopus Fire District, the Town of Esopus, Ulster County, or the State of New York.

Our commitment

Esopus Fire Department is committed to making this website usable by everyone in the community we serve, including residents who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification, or other assistive technologies.

Our standard

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. This is the standard adopted by U.S. federal agencies and most state and local governments for public-facing websites.

What we have done

  • Color contrast meets or exceeds WCAG AA on every page
  • Every interactive element can be reached and operated with a keyboard
  • A “Skip to main content” link appears at the top of every page
  • Page structure uses proper headings and landmarks for screen reader navigation
  • Forms have visible labels and clear error messages
  • Images include descriptive alt text where they convey meaning
  • Videos posted to our YouTube channel are captioned
  • The site respects “reduced motion” preferences set in the operating system

Known limitations

This site is maintained by volunteers, not professional web developers. We do our best, but a few areas may fall short of our goal:

  • * Older PDF documents (meeting minutes, archived flyers) may not be fully tagged for screen readers. We are working to replace these with accessible versions over time.
  • User-submitted content (comments on news posts, third-party social media embeds) may not meet the same standard as the rest of the site.
  • Photographs from past events may have brief or generic alt text where the original photographer or context is unknown.

Need help, or found a problem?

If something on this site is hard to read, hard to use, or not working with your assistive technology, please tell us. We will do our best to fix it promptly, and in the meantime we will provide the information in another format if you need it.

Reach us through our Contact page.

When reporting a problem, it helps if you can tell us:

  • * The page or feature where you ran into trouble (a URL is great if you have it)
  • What you were trying to do
  • What assistive technology, browser, or device you were using
